People die as US naval ship attempts rescue

A US naval ship which attempted to rescue people from a broken-down skiff in the Gulf of Aden has failed in the attempt.

Navy officials in Washington have said the USS Winston Churchill was towing the skiff after engineers had failed to re-start it engine.

As the towing was taking place, passengers on the skiff rushed to one side of the vessel to receive food from the Americans.

As the weight shifted, the skiff capsized.

All 85 passengers went into the water, although sixty-one were rescued.

The survivors are now and aboard the USS Winston Churchill.
