Ridge Meadows RCMP have made an arrest in connection with an alleged gang rape at a party in Pitt Meadows last weekend.
RCMP say an 18-year-old man from Maple Ridge was arrested Thursday afternoon and later released.
Police are recommending sexual-assault charges against the teen.
A 16-year-old boy who allegedly took photos of the rape and shared them with friends by cellphone and Facebook was arrested Tuesday. He has since been released and police say they are hoping Crown counsel will approve charges related to production of child porn.
A 16-year-old girl was allegedly drugged at the rave party last Friday, taken outside and raped by a group of five to seven young men, while another group of youths watched. Police say she suffered “significant injuries.”
“We have interviewed a number of people who were at the party, but there are still many police need to speak with, and we still want these people to come forward,” said Insp. Derren Lench with Ridge Meadows RCMP.
“We have made this second arrest, but there is still much followup we must do before that charge will proceed.”
A few hundred teens are estimated to have attended the rave last Friday night. Since the event took place, police say the photos of the alleged rape have been widely distributed over cellphones and computers of teens who attended the party.
An RCMP officer addressed Pitt Meadows high school students in a series of presentations Friday. School district communications manager Seamus Nesling said the officer reinforced to students that uploading the kind of images that were allegedly taken at the rave party constitutes “a serious legal offence.”
“If someone’s under the age of 18, then this is child pornography, and if you pass it on to someone, you’re distributing child pornography,” he said.
Nesling said the RCMP officers also talked to students about taking precautions when attending parties where drugs and alcohol are involved and about the dangers of “date rape” drugs.
The district is making counselling available through critical incident response teams at each of the schools.
Nesling said use of social media, cyber-bullying and other issues have previously been discussed with students by counsellors visiting classrooms, or through special assemblies.
“Throughout their high school career, these sorts of things are talked about a lot,” he said.
